Golden State Warriors should sign Cousins – His contract is cheap

Finances will be a problem that plagues the Golden State Warriors for the next few years. There’s a cost to drafting three of the best players in the NBA. The trio of Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Stephen Curry are eating a large chunk of their cap space every year – but it’s hard to say they don’t deserve it.

Less deserving, however, is Andrew Wiggins. He is the 25th highest-paid player in the NBA this season, making roughly $30 million a year and set to make over $60 million in the next two seasons. This isn’t to say Wiggins hasn’t been playing good basketball, he has, but I think we all agree he isn’t worth a max contract.

Nonetheless, the combination of Wiggins, Curry, Green and Thompson puts a heavy strain on the Warriors’ salary. So much so, that the next four highest-paid players on the roster (Kelly Oubre, Kevon Looney, James Wiseman and Kent Bazemore) barely make more together than Wiggins himself.

This means that any moves the Warriors do make must be done under tight guidelines. Thankfully, DeMarcus Cousins is only making $2 million this year from Houston and will gladly join a title-contending team for cheap.

With the DPE (Disabled Player Exception) the Dubs can sign a player for up to $9 million this season. I feel pretty confident this will allow the Warriors to acquire Cousins without much trouble.
