While it always felt like the Golden State Warriors had their hearts set on James Wiseman, a new report suggests they seriously considered taking LaMelo Ball in the 2020 NBA Draft.

Jalen Rose, a guy who normally doesn’t break news (though a fantastic analyst and media member) recently stated that the Dubs promised to select Ball before going back on their decision and taking Wiseman with the No. 2 pick.

Jalen Rose has stated the Golden State Warriors apparently promised LaMelo Ball they would take him on NBA Draft night. What happened?

On the Jalen and Jacoby Podcast, Rose told the story of how he was listening to the phone call when Golden State told Ball’s team that they were planning on taking him on draft night. Then, shortly after, Adam Silver announced the second pick… and Wiseman put on a Warriors’ hat.

So, why the sudden change of heart? Well, we’re not entirely sure. Rose never expanded on the situation, simply saying ‘the story will come out soon.’ This leaves us with nothing substantial as obviously, the Dubs considered taking Ball but ultimately went with the best fit for their future.

While yes, Ball is balling on the Charlotte Hornets, averaging 15.8 points, 6.3 assists and 6.0 rebounds, and leading all rookies in just about every category – the fact remains Wiseman was the right pick for Golden State.

Wiseman is a seven-footer with serious potential as a floor spacer and shot blocker. He’s the most obvious fit next to the Draymond Green, the Splash Brothers and supporting pieces like Andrew Wiggins and Kelly Oubre.

In contrast, the backcourt would have been fairly crowded with Ball. Not to mention, he isn’t shaping up to be a very great defender – something that would have hindered the Warriors.

Don’t get us wrong, Ball would have been incredibly fun to watch this season and maybe he would have found a way to make it work in Golden State. But, for now, it seems the Warriors made the best decision, even if they almost didn’t commit to it.
