Spencer Dinwiddie is on the market and the Golden State Warriors seem like one of the teams who could swing for the young guard. What would it take to get Dinwiddie? Is he worth the cost? Let’s break it down.

The Golden State Warriors are in a position to trade for Spencer Dinwiddie. Here are the pros and cons of pulling the trigger.

The Brooklyn Nets understand their rotations are thin after shipping a ton of assets in exchange for James Harden. It will take some additional depth to win a championship. Seeing as how Dinwiddie is sidelined for the remainder of the season and there are rumors he will use his player option to test the free agency market, it makes sense to trade him now and buckle up for a title run.

According to HoopsHype, league sources have claimed Dinwiddie is available for a quality role player and a package of second round picks. Should the Warriors bite on this offer?

Pros

What are the pros of acquiring Dinwiddie?

Firstly, the Dubs gain another ball-handler who can alleviate some of their troubles. Dinwiddie can carry some of the load next season so that Stephen Curry isn’t the only high-level distributor on the floor.

Furthermore, Dinwiddie is a skilled scorer. He averaged a career-best 20.6 points and 6.8 assists last season, showing he can be effective from all three areas of the floor. This versatility on offense would be huge for Golden State.

Lastly, Dinwiddie appears perfectly comfortable being the sixth man. This makes him an easy fit with the Warriors and standing at 6’5″, he’s just tall enough to create some interesting three-guard lineups down the stretch of games.

Cons

Now for the downsides. The toughest part of trading for Dinwiddie would be giving up Kelly Oubre, as he’s really the only logical player to include in this deal.

Stricly on paper, Dinwiddie is the better individual player. He’s a more efficient scorer, better passer and though he’s not a particularly good defender, Dinwiddie is capable of holding his own. Or, at least, not being a detriment.

Yet, this is where problems emerge for Golden State. One thing that makes Oubre so valuable for them is his defensive skill set. He’s a lanky wing who has been their best perimeter defender for most of the season.

Swapping Oubre for Dinwiddie weakens the Dubs’ defense even more than it already has been. And, the Dubs have to feel confident they can persuade Dinwiddie to remain on the roster for next season, something that wouldn’t be guaranteed.

Nonetheless, Dinwiddie is a clear upgrade offensively and there’s a chance Klay Thompson’s return will be enough to keep the ship afloat defensively. This is an interesting option for the Warriors with clear trade-offs. With the deadline approaching, keep an eye on this hypothetical deal.
