Golden State Warriors Rumors: Danny Green is not worth the price
By Tony Pesta
Just before the NBA Trade Deadline buzzer, the Golden State Warriors have reportedly emerged as contenders to trade for Danny Green. While the Dubs are in need of veteran wing players – Green is not worth the price.
The Golden State Warriors are reportedly interested in acquiring Danny Green from the Philadelphia 76ers before the deadline today.
Green, a back-to-back reigning champion after stints in Toronto and Los Angeles, has played a starting role for Philly as they leap out to the best record in the Eastern Conference. He’s providing quality defense on the perimeter and averaging close to 10 points per game on 39 percent shooting from the 3-point line.
Though he’s become a bit of a joke on Twitter, Green is a valuable player for any team with championship aspirations. This begs the question, what do the Warriors seek to gain from trading for Green?
This would obviously be a move for the future. Green won’t be nearly enough to help them compete this season – but he could assist the Dubs in a title run down the line. However, his contract expires at the end of the year. So, the Warriors would have to feel assured he will return for this deal to be worth it.
But, the cost of matching salaries will put a strain on the Dubs. Green is making $15 million this season, making him a perfect swap financially for Kelly Oubre. This is where the equality ends, however, as Oubre is at least a tier above Green in terms of role players this season.
Oubre is young and just hitting his prime whereas Green is slowly declining at 33 years of age. If the Warriors are keeping their future in mind – then Oubre is the clear choice here. Though, it’s not that simple. Oubre’s contract comes to an end this year as well. It’s assumed that if the Warriors do trade him, it’s because they believe he will leave in free agency anyways.
With other options such as Norman Powell and Aaron Gordon off the table, perhaps Green is their last resort.
