Choosing not to trade Kelly Oubre Jr. at the NBA Trade Deadline could come back to haunt the Golden State Warriors as his recent comments to the press are reasons to be concerned about his future with the team.

Oubre has been a significant contributor for the Warriors since he snapped out of his early-season shooting slump. In addition to being one of their best defenders, he’s expanding his game to become a reliable 3-point threat that pairs nicely with Stephen Curry.

His effectiveness in recent weeks has been enough for Warriors fans to fall in love. At only 25-years of age, Oubre has the potential to be a key piece to rebuilding the Dubs’ dynasty. But… there’s just one problem.

It continues to look like Kelly Oubre Jr. is going to leave in free agency, meaning the Golden State Warriors may have made a grave mistake.

Oubre’s contract ends this season. And, there’s good reason to assume a number of NBA teams will be bidding for him. Add in the fact that those teams can potentially offer more money and a bigger role – Oubre just might leave in free agency. His latest interview certainly doesn’t help ease the minds of Warriors fans.

Oubre made it clear the other night that he is reluctant to become the sixth man next season once Klay Thompson returns. When later asked if he would accept less money to play for the Dubs, Oubre refused to answer the question.

These comments by themselves don’t necessarily mean it’s time to hit the panic button, however, It’s important to remember the context. After all, Oubre just watched as the Sacramento Kings blasted the Dubs for 141 points. I’m sure anybody would be agitated.

Nonetheless, there’s plenty of reason for the Warriors to feel worried. At the very least, they haven’t convinced Oubre to remain on the roster for the foreseeable future. Losing him in free agency for nothing would be a tough pill to swallow after a clear opportunity to move him at the deadline.
