Golden State Warriors player with the most to prove: Kevon Looney

The Golden State Warriors have only a handful of players making above a minimum salary.

That’s what four players on max-value contracts does to you. That said, one of those players is center Kevon Looney. Looney signed a three-year contract after a solid 2019 postseason run. He primarily showed his use against Houston.

He was a competent defender and more importantly a high-level offensive rebounder. The past season and a half, Looney hasn’t been healthy, and when he does play, he hasn’t been as effective as Golden State had hoped.

Looney will have ample opportunity these last few weeks as James Wiseman is out for the season and Juan Toscano-Anderson is currently out and in concussion protocol. Having started 19 games, Looney will partially dictate Golden State’s success.

He’s averaged 3.8 points per game this season, shooting 55.6 percent from the field. He’s surprisingly also made four threes. Looney also averaged 1.8 offensive boards per game, down from 2.4 per game during that 2018-19 season.

Looney needs to be better, and with the minutes all being given at him at center over the next month, he should be.
