The Golden State Warriors have had a bittersweet issue on their hands when it comes to Kelly Oubre Jr. and his future with the team. His prolonged improvements are great for the team long-term — but his increased confidence, faced with the return of Klay Thompson and therefore decreased role, might have pushed Oubre away from the team this offseason.
Oubre has been this balling for the last two seasons. He posted a career-high 18.7 points per game in Phoenix last year and is rivalling Andrew Wiggins as the second-best scoring option on Golden State.
Nonetheless, there’s no debate Oubre will likely take a backseat to Thompson once the second Splash Brother returns. A role on the bench is something Oubre has ducked in the past but recent statements appear he may be changing his mind on the circumstances.
There have been concerns around Kelly Oubre’s future with the Golden State Warriors but his recent comments are encouraging.
Since returning to the court from a wrist injury, Oubre has been playing with the second unit. It’s an easy way for Oubre to slowly reacclimate himself into the lineup but also a sneak preview of what his role in the future could become.
When asked about his recent time on the bench, Oubre had this to say:
"“I’m just here to help this team win,” he said. “Whatever I can do to help this team, that’s what I’m gonna do. Staying ready so I don’t have to get ready.”Via NBC Sports Bay Area"
The last part of this quote is the most telling. Is Oubre hinting that he’s ready for anything the team needs from him — including coming off the bench next season? Perhaps.
One thing is for sure, coming off the bench hasn’t hindered his ability to make an impact. Oubre had 24 points and nine rebounds in 36 minutes against the Washington Wizards. His consistent scoring and defensive efforts on the perimeter will ensure he never falls out of the rotation.
With Oubre’s future lingering over the team, it’s encouraging to hear him speak with a more open mind about his potential role moving forward.
