Last offseason, the Golden State Warriors wanted to make adding a veteran backup point guard a priority. They signed the Celtics Brad Wanamaker.
At the time, it felt like an underwhelming addition, and after trading him to the Charlotte Hornets prior to the deadline, they’ll be back in that same situation this coming offseason, another period that will be spent with little money to use on free agents.
The Golden State Warriors have several holes on their roster and little cap space to fill those holes, but the options will still be there.
Between Draymond Green, Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Andrew Wiggins, they have four max-value contracts already. They’ll have the open roster spots, just not the big-time money to give a potential signee.
To end the regular season, the Warriors have second-year guard Jordan Poole. While Poole’s played well, especially immediately after return from the team’s G-League affiliate, he’s not quite as good of a leader as the Warriors would want to captain their second unit.
Having a Rajon Rondo-like player to come off the bench would be ideal. With Thompson returning, the Warriors can promise a title-contending team, unless the five-time All-Star can’t quite get back on the court.
That said, without much money to offer, let’s dive into three free-agent point guards the Warriors should reach out to this offseason.
