Golden State Warriors NBA Draft target: Davion Mitchell

The highest rising player in the NBA Draft, Davion Mitchell is fresh off a national championship run and could be a good fit for the Golden State Warriors.

Pros

Mitchell has been described as a ‘hard-nosed’ point guard for his muscular frame and bulldog mentality. Though he is only 6’2″, Mitchell is 205 pounds of pure strength and agility that make him an elite perimeter defender.

Offensively, Mitchell is a versatile threat. He averaged 14.0 points and 5.5 assists on a hyper-efficient 51.1 field goal percentage and 44.7 percent clip from the 3-point line in his final year with Baylor.

Cons

Mitchell will be 23 years old by the time his rookie NBA season officially starts, making him one of the older prospects slotted to be selected in the lottery. This causes concern for his potential as it is possible Mitchell has nearly reached his ceiling already.

Will his efficient scoring and decision-making hold up at the NBA level? This is something we won’t know for sure until he takes the floor for the first time.

Best Role

By the looks of it, Mitchell will be a quality backup guard for a team like the Warriors. If he can be trusted to enter the game and lead the second unit as a distributor, occasional scorer and most importantly, a lockdown defender, Mitchell will be a welcomed addition to this roster. I’d liken him to a watered-down version of Kyle Lowry.
