Golden State Warriors upcoming free agents

This is the big one. With Stephen Curry’s contract nearing a conclusion, the Golden State Warriors will be praying to avoid the biggest potential disaster they could face. Is there any possibility Curry leaves the Bay Area?

In short, no. At least, not at the moment. I really don’t see any reason to believe Curry would leave the franchise he helped build. Ditching Klay Thompson and Draymond Green for… well, anybody, seems like a stretch at this point.

Nonetheless, the Dubs’ front office is on the clock. Will we still feel confident Curry remains in Golden State after next season if they miss the playoffs again? There is only one way to avoid this — build a contender around Curry as quickly as possible. This will be a challenge for all of the reasons we’ve already discussed in this article.

Another obstacle the Dubs have to avoid is losing Kelly Oubre Jr., whose contract ends this summer. The general feeling is Oubre is on his way out as he shows a reluctance to come off the bench and likely feels he can earn more money on the free market. However, I wouldn’t bet against the Warriors finding a way to reel him back in. This one is about 50/50 in my eyes.

Even so, the dominos are clearly being set up. Losing Oubre, one of the Warriors’ most valuable perimeter threats, could be the first of many disasters. Let’s say Oubre leaves, the Dubs miss on their picks in the NBA Draft AND the front office fails to sign more talent because of their lack of cap space. Would this lead the Dubs to miss the playoffs again — potentially giving Curry enough incentive to walk out on the franchise? I’d rather not find out.
