Golden State Warriors: Pros of trading James Wiseman

Okay, the pros of trading James Wiseman depend heavily on who the Golden State Warriors get in return for him. What should the Dubs expect in a package for Wiseman?

Dubs could get a star

It would be difficult to see a world where the Warriors part ways with Wiseman without receiving an All-Star caliber player directly in return. In fact, there is no sense in trading Wiseman if it isn’t for a star.

So who can the Warriors target? Well, it depends on what happens in the summer. Could Paul George, Bradley Beal, Zach Lavine or Domantas Sabonis become available? There’s no telling for sure, but we can be sure these are the types of players the Warriors would target.

In this case, the Dubs are flipping a raw prospect for talent that can help them win immediately. Seems like a good idea if the team is invested in winning before Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green call it quits.

Wiseman could be a bust

I want to start by saying I don’t think it is fair to judge Wiseman too harshly for his rookie season. And, as we’ll see in the next slide, I would lean more towards the side of Wiseman figuring it out than him ending up as a bust.

Yet, I have to acknowledge this is one potential disaster the Dubs could avoid by trading Wiseman. His skillset was promising but astonishingly raw (for good reason). As of now, Wiseman really doesn’t fit as a rotational player on any NBA team. It will take some growth for him to crack consistent minutes — and a ton of development to reach lottery pick status.

Trading Wiseman, while his stock is still high, could see the Dubs collecting max profit from this pick. Who knows, in a few years, Wiseman may be worth significantly less.
