Golden State Warriors player unlikely to return: Alen Smailagić

The Golden State Warriors drafted two power forwards in the second round of the 2019 NBA Draft. One of those two was Alen Smailagić. The other was former All-Rookie First Team stud, Eric Paschall.

Smailagić, also known as Smiley, hasn’t contributed much and may not make a return to the Dubs roster. The Warriors will have several young prospects coming into the Bay Area, and Smiley hasn’t shown enough to stick around.

While he’s been hurt at times and has played well while with the Santa Cruz Warriors when healthy, Smailagić averaged 1.9 points per game in 15 games this past season. His rookie season wasn’t much better, averaging just over 4 points per game.

Management seems to like the potential upside of Smailagić, but with roster spots coming at a premium this upcoming season, it may not be easy to retain the Serbian forward.

He has a non-guaranteed deal, and with Looney, Paschall, Wiseman, Green, and most likely another center like Marquese Chriss playing for the Dubs next season, the depth at the four should be fine, giving the team freedom to let Smailagić go if needed.
