Golden State Warriors: Pass or pursue 7 offseason targets
By Tony Pesta
Golden State Warriors should consider Rudy Gay
Rudy Gay is a 34-year-old vet who just played one of his more lackluster seasons. And yet, he holds some value to any team looking to expand their lineup before the start of next year.
Reasons to pursue
Right off the bat, Gay would be the oldest player on the roster. He’s had a long NBA career and can bring stability to an otherwise inconsistent and inexperienced Dubs team.
Other than that, Gay is also a skilled scorer. He has lost the springy athleticism that made him a versatile threat but he’s capable of spacing the floor and playing small-ball power forward. Gay averaged 11.4 points on roughly 40 percent shooting from the 3-point line last year.
Gay fills in as a backup forward pretty easily in this lineup. Especially if Kelly Oubre leaves in free agency this year. Entering the summer as an unrestricted free agent, Gay should be available for a cheap contract.
Reasons to pass
Age is a double-edged sword, in this scenario. Gay didn’t look very youthful on the defensive end and could become a detriment to one of the league’s stronger defensive teams. Nonetheless, Gay has great size and should be able to have a positive impact if he’s motivated for one last hoorah.
