Golden State Warriors should consider Bobby Portis

Bobby Portis has always been a three-level scorer but does he fit with the Golden State Warriors? Let’s find out.

Reasons to pursue

Portis is having a strong season with the Milwaukee Bucks. He’s helped spread the floor for Giannis Antetokounmpo by being a lethal stretch-four. Portis clipped almost 50 percent of his more than 150 attempts from the 3-point line. Only Marcus Morris and Joe Harris shot more efficiently on this number of shots.

The Warriors are a strong shooting team but they do lack spacing in their frontcourt. Adding Portis to the rotation would work wonders for expanding the floor and opening lanes for the rest of the team.

Reasons to pass

Despite playing a bench role in Milwaukee, Portis is fairly ball-dominant. That is to say, he’s not much use when he’s not shooting the ball. He’s a below-average playmaker and a less-than deadly defender. Portis is at his best as a spark plug scorer, which is good, but maybe not the best for a team-oriented franchise like the Warriors.

Even so, I think the Dubs would be happy to add Portis if it’s for a low price. Portis has a $3.8 million option this summer, meaning if he declines to rejoin the Bucks it’s either because he really wants to go somewhere else or he feels he can make more money. This complicates things for the Dubs, but I think they’ll jump on the opportunity to sign Portis if he’s available.

Verdict: Pursue
