Dear basketball gods, I know the last decade has been unequivocally kind to the Golden State Warriors. Three championships in five years are nothing to scoff at. But, we are asking for one last favor in the form of Cade Cunnigham. Please, allow the Warriors to win the 2021 NBA Draft Lottery.
The odds aren’t on our side, I know that. With less than a one percent chance of winning the lottery, it would take some incredible luck, if not a miracle, for the Dubs to secure the top pick and acquire the potential superstar.
I understand the Warriors might have committed a basketball sin by stacking the deck in the summer of 2016, but the injury-plagued 2019 NBA Finals and back-to-back season-ending surgeries for Klay Thompson must have been valid enough punishment.
That is why, with only a few years remaining for the big three of Thompson, Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, I ask that you grant us one more blessing in the upcoming draft lottery.
It’s going to take a miracle for the Golden State Warriors to win the 2021 NBA Draft Lottery and take Cade Cunningham. So here is our final prayer.
There is no question that seeing Cade operate alongside the Splash Brothers would bring joy to basketball purists everywhere. Even fans of opposing teams would have to marvel at these generational talents playing together.
Cunningham is the perfect predecessor to the Warriors’ dynasty. An all-around force of nature that can serve as a modern combo guard, Cade is destined for sustained greatness at the NBA level. However, nowhere can he see more success than in a Warriors’ uniform.
Unlike other lottery teams, the Warriors can offer Cade an instant shot at winning a title. Starting his career as a key rotational piece to a championship-caliber team, only to eventually carry the torch from Curry, is a path few prospects ever get the opportunity to follow.
And yet, Cade and the Warriors’ fate all comes down to a stroke of luck on June 22. For the record, no team has ever won the lottery with a less than one percent chance at earning the top pick, though Cleveland, Chicago and Orlando have all done it at below two percent (Cleveland did it twice last decade!).
It would be the first of its kind and that’s why we are sending one final prayer to the basketball gods for Golden State to win the Cade Cunningham sweepstakes.
