Golden State Warriors: Bob Myers gives interesting message regarding state of team
The Golden State Warriors will have or have had 3 lottery picks in the 2020 and 2021 NBA Draft. Those two drafts followed five straight seasons of dominance, winning three titles in five NBA Finals appearances.
The last two years have been dictated by injuries.
While the Golden State Warriors have missed the playoffs, general manager Bob Myers isn’t looking to risk this coming year in order to develop new players.
During the Covid-19 extended season, two-time MVP Stephen Curry and five-time All-Star Klay Thompson combined for just five games. Thompson, when rehabbing for his return, then ruptured his Achilles. He hasn’t played in an NBA game since the 2019 NBA Finals.
Everyone is hopeful that changes by the fall as the Warriors plan to get him back at full strength.
With Draymond Green, Thompson, and Curry all healthy heading into the 2021-2022 season, the Warriors should want to do what they can to put a product on the court that can compete at the highest level.
General manager Bob Myers may be looking to do just that, and while it’s not certain, that could mean trading their two lottery picks in the upcoming draft. Myers made an interesting statement on playing to win versus developing the future of Golden State basketball.
This is interesting especially since Draymond Green commented on how the Wizards are trying to develop young prospects while also giving big-time minutes to Bradley Beal and Russell Westbrook.
The Warriors have a championship-contending team just with the Big 3, and as we saw with Stephen Curry’s performances this past season, they could just be one piece away.
However, getting more veteran talent is typically never a bad thing, especially considering Golden State has multiple lottery picks. Trading one and maybe their pick next season could result in a quality veteran being added.
Given Myers’ comments, the door has been left open for the team to make moves. It may even alert people to a potential James Wiseman trade as the 2020 No. 2 overall pick will still need quite a bit of development before he reaches an All-Star level of play.
While we already knew it would be, Myers is keeping this offseason interesting. More news should follow as Golden State starts to prepare for a lengthy next few months that’ll include the NBA combine, workouts, and potential trades.
