Golden State Warriors NBA Draft: Jalen Johnson

Jalen Johnson’s time in college was short and sweet. Well, for the most part. The freshman flashed all of the electric skills that made him a five-star recruit, while also putting his flaws on full display before opting out of the remainder of Duke’s season.

Johnson ranked as the 13th best player in the country according to ESPN before committing to Duke. His lanky frame and bulldoze-type strength make him an eye-popping athlete in transition. This kid can really move and if you’re standing in his way, look out!

In just 13 games, Johnson posted averages of 11.2 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists on 52/44/63 shooting splits. He was an efficient scorer and a skilled (yet reluctant) passer. His ball-handling ability is great for his size and he showed a good 3-point stroke despite being an underwhelming free throw shooter.

It’s hard to tell how high Johnson’s ceiling is. He’s only 19 and has already put together some strong offensive skills in terms of creating his own shot and exploding to the rim. However, there are questions about his dedication to improving and his motor on defense.

The Golden State Warriors wouldn’t be wrong to pick Johnson. After all, a 6’9″ forward with a versatile skill set is right in their wheelhouse. However, I think there are better options at No. 7.
