Golden State Warriors could land No. 1 overall pick via blockbuster trade with Detroit
Is the chance of this happening under one percent? Probably. But, did an NBA draft analyst say that it’s something the Pistons would look at? Yes.
That said, after the NBA draft lottery, all eyes turned to the Detroit Pistons, who had former defensive mastermind, Ben Wallace, smiling from cheek to cheek as the team was awarded the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming NBA Draft. Could the Warriors pry it away from them?
The Golden State Warriors should look to move up in the 2021 NBA Draft, and they may be able to assemble a packet to get as high as No. 1.
It’s assumed that every team in the NBA would opt to take Oklahoma State guard Cade Cunningham with the top-overall selection. Cunningham averaged 20.1 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game during his lone season at OSU.
With small forward Jerami Grant and point guard Killian Hayes, there’s no denying that Cunningham wouldn’t the perfect fit, although given his skill set he should fit just about anywhere from point guard to power forward.
If they don’t view Cunningham as an all-out potential superstar, could the Pistons trade the pick? If they consider it, could the Warriors make an intriguing pitch?
"“Someone here in Chicago [at the draft combine] pitched me — do you think the Warriors or the Pistons would do seven, 14 and [James] Wiseman for the No. 1 pick in the draft? Does either side do that?” Lowe asked via NBC Sports."
To be fair, it’s a fine question.
That trio of assets should have quite a bit of value, especially to an organization that may be big on Wiseman and not necessarily in need of a combo guard/forward. While trading away the No. 1 would still be insane, draft analyst Jonathan Givony didn’t shy away from the possibility.
"“And yeah, I think Detroit would definitely look at that. They were one of the teams that supposedly loved Wiseman a year ago. So that could be an interesting move for them. But their fans would be disappointed by that I would think,” Givony replied."
It would 100 crush the Pistons fanbase to have Cunningham basically already in the Motor City just to get Wiseman and two picks. While Wiseman did have a Chris Bosh-like rookie season, there’s telling if he’ll develop into that type of star.
Along with Wiseman, two lottery picks are a nice combination of value despite them being at 7 and 14. Regardless, I don’t think Detroit will have any business trading the No. 1 overall pick in the coming months.
