Golden State Warriors should pass on Collin Sexton

We’ve covered two players the Golden State Warriors should pursue. Now, let’s analyze a player they should pass on. This isn’t because Collin Sexton is a bad player — but it’s unlikely he can be obtained at the right price for Golden State.

Sexton is expected to ask for a max contract extension by the time his rookie deal expires next summer. For the Dubs, this is an impossible price to match as they’re stymied by Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson AND Andrew Wiggins in terms of cap.

That’s not to say Sexton wouldn’t make a firey sixth man for a one-year rental. Sexton averaged over 24 points per game on efficient shooting splits in his third NBA season. He’s a pure scorer with blazing foot speed and a potent mid-range jump shot. There is no doubt in my mind that Sexton could join the Dubs and succeed as a backup to Curry.

Even so, the price of trading for him and attempting to retain him next season just isn’t a feasible one. Plus, Sexton’s defensive woes are an area of concern for a team with championship aspirations. This is one prospect they should pass on.
