Move that could devastate Warriors offseason: Veterans choose other franchises

A key factor that could alter the Warriors offseason is how they’re able to attract free-agent veterans. One that’s gained steam recently is Cleveland Cavaliers forward Kevin Love.

However, unlike the early years in their dynasty, the Warriors won’t have the first dibs on every veteran free agent. While they should be among the handful of title contenders next season, they aren’t going to be as attractive as a destination as the Brooklyn Nets.

Lou Williams, Blake Griffin, JJ Redick, JaVale McGee, Nicolas Batum, DeMarcus Cousins and many other players with decades of combined experience will be on the market. The Warriors should at least have preliminary conversations with the vast majority.

Golden State can really only afford the veteran’s minimum, but for most of these players, that will be what they end up receiving regardless. It could have a catastrophic impact if the bulk of these player shy away from the Warriors.

They need to add depth, and experienced depth would be idea. That said, let’s hope players like Love, if he’s bought out, Williams, and others at least take Golden State seriously when looking for their next NBA home.
