Over the last few seasons, the Golden State Warriors have been no stranger to trading.
The main blockbuster trade that they pulled off involved D’Angelo Russell and Andrew Wiggins. Another key aspect of that trade was the Minnesota Timberwolves 2021 top-3 protected first-round pick. That pick has been conveyed to the Warriors, and they may be looking to trade it again.
The Golden State Warriors have two lottery picks in the July 29 NBA Draft, and they’re clearly looking to trade the more valuable one, No. 7 overall.
The Warriors are in a tough position. They clearly want to plan for the future, but at the same time, there is a push to make the most of their current roster, one, that if compiled correctly, will be able to compete for a title.
If that’s the route they want to take, trading the No. 7 overall pick is almost a must. And, per a recent report, they’re intensely looking to get a deal done. The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor was the one to release the report.
“League sources say the Warriors are highly active in trade talks involving this selection,” O’Connor wrote. O’Connor proceeded to note that if the Warriors didn’t trade, James Bouknight would make the most sense for them of players supposedly available at No. 7.
While we know that they’re looking to get a deal done, the next few pieces of the puzzle to fill are who is worth trading the pick for and what other assets are they going to be willing to couple with the pick.
For now, it feels center James Wiseman is off the market unless it’s for a Bradley Beal-like player.
The No. 14 pick should be available in discussions as should shooting guard Jordan Poole, but neither of those assets being on the table have been reported. Andrew Wiggins, to make the salaries match in any trade, would likely be an option.
Nonetheless, there is quite a bit that goes into any trade, including how a potential player will fit with the Big 3. Is Myles Turner or Pascal Siakam really the piece that would make the Warriors that much better than if Wiggins stayed. on the roster?
Over the next week, we’ll see what general manager Bob Myers thinks. For now, it’s clear the phones are active, and as we near the draft, the players that Golden State is eyeing should become more known.
