Golden State Warriors prospect: Evan Mobley’s defensive skill set

Defense is where Mobley really stands out. His comparisons to Bam Adebayo on that end are certainly warranted. He’s a very strong rim protector with sound technical skills that has the athleticism and lateral quickness to defend in space as well.

The one thing that makes the comparison so apt is this strength of Mobley’s.

Most bigs defending in space are looking to get out of that situation ASAP. Not Evan Mobley. He attacks everyone in sight and in a remarkably controlled manner. There’s a chance he could match Bam as a perimeter defending big and be even more impactful as a rim protector.

Few players have the ability to block three shots per game and consistently stay out of foul trouble. There’s a real scenario where Mobley is a true defensive unicorn as a center at the next level if his work ethic and physical development are there.

Much like James Wiseman, expectations always need to be tempered with massive, mobile centers in the NBA.

It’s much easier for bigs to look completely lost defensively their first year compared to wings. He’s as ready as any 19-year-old center can be to contribute on both ends, but it’s no guarantee he can adjust to the pace and extra level of skill right away.
