Golden State Warriors should retain Kelly Oubre Jr.

Update: Kelly Oubre has signed with the Charlotte Hornets

Now let’s address the elephant in the room. There is no faster way to maintain competitiveness and continuity with this roster than to bring back Kelly Oubre Jr. next season.

Oubre has the benefit of playing a full season under Steve Kerr and made some notable leaps as the year went on. His knowledge of the system and chemistry with the team is something that can’t be bought elsewhere in free agency. He is far from mastering the Warriors’ offense but his experience is valuable.

Sadly, it feels the Warriors can only do so much to bring him back. Oubre has resisted the urge to outright commit long-term to the franchise and it is his own personal preference as to where he plays next year.

Nevertheless, the Warriors will need to continue persuading Oubre to stay. He’s a hyper-aggressive defender with elite athleticism and enough touch as a 3-point shooter to spread the floor when sitting in the corner. All signs point toward Oubre being a key piece to the team if he returns.
