Warriors starting center: Why Wiseman belongs on the second unit

Wiseman needs to be a rim-running, pick-and-roll, lob-threat center with playmakers Draymond Green and Steph Curry on the floor. Wiseman simply doesn’t fit that description.

Wiseman is better off being the anchor of the second unit. There, Wiseman will team up with 3rd-year guard Jordan Poole to form a dynamic second-team duo.

Those two will likely be anchored by Andre Iguodala, Otto Porter Jr., and Bjelica, who are all solid to great floor spacers. This will give Wiseman the freedom to operate under the basket and go to work. He will face fewer imposing centers and more finesse backups.

The starting center on the Warriors also needs to have a commanding defensive presence. Wiseman, despite being 7-foot-1 with a 7-foot-6 wingspan, didn’t display that.

He had moments, but those moments weren’t frequent enough. Wiseman tends to focus on offense, and for his long-term development, that is a good thing, but to be the Warriors anchor right now, they need defense.
