Golden State Warriors’ Damion Lee stepping into mentor role
The Golden State Warriors have drafted a plethora of talented young prospects over the last several seasons, and shooting guard Damion Lee is doing his best to make sure they feel at home in the Bay Area.
One player they drafted in which they have high hopes for is Arkansas’ guard Moses Moody.
He was their second pick in the first round of the 2021 NBA Draft. Moody was a stud his freshman season and ended up playing only that sole season before taking his talents to the professional level.
With the Golden State Warriors drafting many young talents, mentors will be needed, and Damion Lee has been doing his best to be one of them.
Moody and Jonathan Kuminga are both entering at 19 years old. 20-year-old James Wiseman joins them as the team’s young and talented core. Obviously, the Big 3 (Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green) are still the unanimous leaders.
Their role on the team may not make them the best mentors though. However, shooting guard Damion Lee is in a position to step up and make sure the group is comfortable with the organization.
“Right now, it’s really been [Damion] Lee. He’s been a guy I’ve been talking to a lot. He’s been telling me a lot of game, behind-the-scenes type stuff, and really how to approach the league coming in as a young guy,” Moody told NBC Sports’ Kendra Andrews on the Dubs Talk podcast.
There isn’t much talk about if Kuminga is getting those behind-the-scenes conversations, but I would imagine he is. The Warriors are a world-class organization, and they’ll want these three to feel at home, especially as they age into the league.
As for Lee, his number could be called as a starter to commence the new season.
Thompson isn’t expected back until Christmas which will open up the shooting guard spot for the taking. Jordan Poole, Moody, Lee, and Mychal Mulder all seem likely to hold the spot with Lee the most obvious option.
Lee isn’t the most experienced player, but he is a veteran. Lee is 28 years old yet has played in the NBA for just four seasons. He’s seemingly found a home in Golden State, and he’s clearly helping those new to the franchise adjust as well.
This is a win-win situation as Moody will grow more comfortable in his position and status with the team while Lee becomes a slightly more valuable leader as an impactful locker room presence.
