Ben Simmons is still a future target for Golden State Warriors

The keyword here is ‘future.’ While the asking price for Ben Simmons is simply too high for the Golden State Warriors right now, there is an ongoing split in the franchise of some who want to go all-in for the young star. Therefore, if the Philadelphia 76ers grow desperate to move Simmons later in the season, his price could go down, and the Warriors could leap into discussions.

“But, I do think they’ll be watching that,” Marcus Thompson of The Athletic said on The Ringer NBA Podcast. Simmons is not a player they are prepared to trade the farm for but Thompson believes Golden State will monitor his situation as the season progresses.

There is reason to assume the Warriors will reengage trade talks if the asking price is lowered significantly. It is hard to see the Dubs giving up more than just one of Jonathan Kuminga or James Wiseman — so that is likely the cutoff for any deal being made.

In the event a swap is agreed on, the Warriors would land a 25-year-old All-NBA caliber player who can thrive as a point forward surrounded by 3-point shooters. We are all aware of Simmons’ downfalls and his fit next to Draymond Green makes things difficult. But, if the front office is already split on the matter — Simmons will certainly be on their radar moving forward.
