Why Ben Simmons is worth risk for Warriors: He could take defense to next level

Ben Simmons was among the finalists for Defensive Player of the Year.

There were countless games this season in which assignments were missed at crucial moments. Simmons may not fix all the issues, but he would help solve some of them. With a 7-foot wingspan, Simmons is able to get into passing lanes with ease.

Also having been nominated on two All-Defensive teams, Simmons has been able to take his defense to the next level over the last few seasons. During the 2019-2020 season, Simmons’ 2.1 steals per game led the NBA.

That number, while still impressive dropped to around 1.6 per game.

He also averaged 0.6 blocks per game last season. Comfortable guarding elite offensive players, Simmons can take that pressure off Curry and allow an easier assignment for Klay Thompson upon his return.

Per basketball-reference, Simmons had a 106 defensive net rating, helping him achieve an eight net rating. That type of efficiency is something the Warriors could benefit from having on their roster.
