The Golden State Warriors will be working out Isaiah Thomas in the coming days. Thomas, since parting ways with the Boston Celtics following that postseason hip injury which he played through and was clearly never the same, has struggled to find a new team.
Golden State has also worked out Ryan Arcidiacono and Darren Collison, both veteran guards with the latter having played in the league for a decade but retiring after the end of the 2019-2020 season.
The Golden State Warriors will have three workouts with veteran guards after next week ends. They clearly are searching for the best available, veteran guard.
Thomas, a former MVP candidate, has fallen off in the last few seasons, having been quite as efficient since that injury. Given his size and history, Thomas doesn’t seem like a great fit. On paper, the best fit seems to be Collison.
Collison originally retired, but he’s still only 34 years old. He neared 46.8 percent from three during the 2017-2018 season. The ten-year veteran may not be the same player that he left the league as.
However, there’s no denying he’s seemingly better than Arcidiacono and Thomas. Thomas just doesn’t have great size or efficiency. As for Arcidiacono, he averaged 3.1 points per game in 44 games last season. He peaked out at 6.7 points per game his second season in the league.
While there’s no real telling who has the lead in the race for the Dubs last spot, there have been several players that the Warriors are targeting. There still are a few free agents having not yet been named that the Warriors could potentially look to sign, most notably Jeff Teague.
Golden State needs a consistent weapon behind Stephen Curry. It doesn’t have to be primetime, MVP-candidate Thomas, but they need a player that can get the second unit into sets and score at a high level.
So far, they clearly haven’t been overly impressive. The workout with Thomas should help either rule him out or convince the team to add the former Celtics guard. Nonetheless, the need is there, and it’s certainly known.
In the coming weeks, expect the Warriors to add a guard, as the team should undoubtedly start to lower Curry’s minutes in the coming years. Having a player that can help bridge that gap would be huge for the Dubs.
That said, there should be an answer to the question soon, with the addition of Thomas looking the most likely.
