Warriors’ Bob Myers doesn’t take Durant, Green criticism personally
The Golden State Warriors were gifted three years with three of the best shooters in the history of the NBA, but it wasn’t as perfect as many would’ve hoped for. However, at the end of the day, it resulted in two NBA Championships to the Warriors’ record books.
That said, if you followed the team closely during Kevin Durant‘s last season with the franchise, you’ll likely remember an overtime loss to the Clippers, one in which Durant and Draymond Green didn’t see eye-to-eye on how a late-regulation possession with the game on the line developed.
General manager Bob Myers took a high road when talking about the public conversation that Draymond Green and Kevin Durant had this offseason.
There was quite a heated conversation between the two, one that clearly took its toll on the team. Green received a one-game suspension. Looking back on the situation, Green and Durant both thought management handled it wrong.
They concluded it should’ve been something handled between the two without any suspensions being reigned down on either player. Green sat down with Durant in the offseason on a Bleacher Report exclusive interview.
It was a widely covered conversation that featured many interesting talking points. One person criticized was Bob Myers, who has been the Warriors general manager since Green, a second-round pick, was drafted.
The three-time All-Star forward and Myers haven’t talked about the conversation though, the manager noted to Frank Isola and Brian Scalabrine. Per NBC Sports’ Josh Schrock, here’s one of the many quotes.
"“I haven’t even talked to him about it. I haven’t. I mean … I will. But it’s like — I know Brian [Scalabrine] really well. If he said something about me to you, I really wouldn’t — my relationship with him is beyond that, and if it really bothered me I would, but I’ve known Draymond since — he was my first draft. I sat with him when he got suspended for The Finals over in Oakland. I didn’t go to the game. I sat with him at the Oakland A’s game,” Myers said."
It was the statement you’d have hoped for if you were a Warriors fan. Any type of negative criticism back at Green or defending his stance in full could’ve been detrimental to the chemistry of this franchise, especially with Green still playing such a key role.
Now, whether or not Myers still feels he handled that the best way is up in the air, but there’s no denying management felt the need to step in after the exchange. However, it’s the “how” they handled it that mattered the most.
Thankfully, it seems all things are good in the Bay Area, and everyone should be primed and ready for the season to commence next week.
