Game Report: Kuminga debuts as Warriors blowout Thunder
Golden State Warriors v Oklahoma City Thunder: Two Key Stats
1. Defense still leading the way
The Warriors ranked fifth in defense and 20th in offense last season, numbers many thought would be reversed after their preseason display. Whilst they’ve improved to 11th in offensive rating through six games, they rank just ninth in 3-pointers attempted, and seventh in pace of play. Although that’s still high, the preseason would have suggested them being top three in both categories.
It’s still on the defensive end where they’re winning games, holding the Thunder to just 82 points on less than 36% shooting from the floor. They’re ranked fifth in defense through six games, sitting behind the Heat, Jazz, Nuggets and Timberwolves.
2. Rebounding issue non-existent?
Part of the Warriors defense has been the ability to get stops and not give up second chance opportunities. With the lack of a genuine seven-footer whilst James Wiseman continues his injury recovery, many viewed the rebounding element as a major issue for the Warriors this season.
They again won the rebounding battle against the Thunder, crashing the glass for 11 more total boards including seven more on the offensive end. They rank second behind the Heat in defensive rebounding percentage, whilst ranking seventh in overall rebounding percentage.
What’s the reason behind it? A team approach and commitment to box out and rebound by committee. Superstar Stephen Curry is averaging a career-high in rebounds at 7.5 through six games, whilst veteran Andre Iguodala had 10 boards in just over 17 minutes against the Thunder.
