3 Golden State Warriors unlikely to crack the rotation
Golden State Warriors player unlikely to crack rotation: Jonathan Kuminga
A much higher draft pick than Moody was seventh-overall pick Jonathan Kuminga. Kuminga skipped college and instead played with the G-League Ignite. The Ignite is meant to help develop these young, ready-to-play studs.
Kuminga did develop, and when he slide in the draft, the Warriors had no choice but to take a chance on the high-risk prospect.
Kuminga has a high ceiling, but like with Moody, they drafted him with the understanding that he wouldn’t make an instant impact for the Dubs. Kuminga has been out for the first several weeks of the season due to a knee injury.
He did manage to get his first taste of the NBA against the Thunder, playing for six minutes and scoring just three points, shooting 1-for-4 from the field. Kuminga is too inconsistent right now for him to get heavy minutes, and that will likely be the case for the entirety of his rookie season.
He’s a star in the making, but he’s certainly far from ready for a permanent role in the rotation.
Expect him to pick up minutes in the G-League or at the end of blowout wins or losses until he showcases improved decision-making, a skill he struggled without throughout his one year with the Ignite.
Kuminga and Moody aren’t expected to play big-time minutes while Bjelica may lose his to Wiseman. That said, it wouldn’t shock me if all three were on the outside looking in within the next few weeks.
