Golden State Warriors need to set the table for Klay Thompson

The Golden State Warriors already look like the best team in the NBA. So, it does not really feel fair that they are going to get the best imaginable upgrade midway through the season in the form of Klay Thompson.

No other team, outside of possible the LA Clippers when/if Kawhi Leonard returns, will get a mid-season injection of talent like the Warriors. The return of Thompson will not only energize the fans who have been eager to see him play again — but the team he is ready to help push over the top once again.

In spite of the excitement, the Warriors need to be patient. Firstly, they can not rush Thompson back before he is fully ready to compete. Second, the Dubs need to create an environment where Klay can gradually reclaim his spot as the best sidekick in the NBA.

Golden State’s early success makes this easier but the team will need to remain consistent. The longer they can sustain this momentum, the easier it will be to ease Thompson back into the fray.

Much of this pressure falls on the shoulders of Jordan Poole. Once Thompson returns, Poole will become the most important member of the bench. Staggering minutes between Stephen Curry and Poole will become easier but Poole will have the task of building chemistry on the fly with the other Splash Brother.

We could be looking at one of the most exciting dynamics in the league soon. Poole has grown as a playmaker and the two-man game between him and Thompson could unearth a whole other layer of options for the Warriors’ offense.

If healthy, Thompson is going to be an impactful player for Golden State regardless. But, if they can properly set the stage, Thompson will maximize his triumphant return to basketball.

Next. Gary Payton II is flying to success, literally. dark
