Game Report: Golden State Warriors stunned by Spurs
Two things we learned
1. Poole is still not a guaranteed closer
Jordan Poole has made huge strides this season, touted by many as a possible candidate for the NBA’s Most Improved Award. Yet, it seems despite his good form, Steve Kerr still isn’t set on him as a nightly closer.
Despite making his first six shots from the floor, Poole didn’t see action in the last five minutes outside the last two offensive possessions. Instead, Kerr preferred to go with Lee as he had done at times earlier in the season. It may have been a surprise maneuver, but nevertheless, it does go to show how much growth Poole has left, especially in Kerr’s eyes.
2. Thompson’s importance evident in games like these
Once Klay Thompson returns, it’s unlikely Kerr will even be faced with any Poole-Lee debate. It’s this kind of game where the sharpshooter can be a huge difference-maker, providing another scoring punch to assist Curry.
Not much went right for the Warriors’ three key scorers; Wiggins was down overall going just 3-9, Poole had limited opportunities, and Curry largely struggled despite his immense willingness to force himself upon the game.
Adding another player capable of scoring 20+ is a luxury in some senses, but also allows more wiggle room in games like these where the offense struggles a little.
The Warriors now have a day off before taking on the Orlando Magic at home on Monday.
