OK, Stephen Curry accomplished history and finally put his name firmly on top of the all-time 3-point list. A spot he will likely hold for decades to follow. But, what’s next for Curry and the Golden State Warriors.

Stephen Curry has made history once again. Now that this long-awaited achievement has been obtained, what’s next for Curry and the Golden State Warriors?

Curry managed to dethrone Ray Allen in 500 fewer games. With no signs of slowing, it is safe to bet Curry is going to continue pouring it on. Just how far can he take it?

At his current rate, Curry will finish the 2021-22 NBA season with over 440 total 3-pointers, obliterating his previous single-season record of 402. More stunning, however, is that he might do this while shooting the worst 3-point percentage of his career (barring his brief 2019-20 campaign).

How many career 3-pointers can Curry make?

Curry is well above league-average at 39.9 percent from deep and it would not be a surprise to see him ramp up his efficiency at some point. This means we could very well see Curry threaten to break the 500 single-season 3-point threshold.

Looking ahead, how much of a lead can Curry build on the all-time record? Even just 40 games at his current pace would put him more than 200 ahead of Allen by the end of this season.

For the sake of being fair and adjusting for his age, let’s assume Curry can play five more seasons of averaging four 3-pointers for at least 70 games a year. This humble estimation would rocket launch Curry to over 4,000 career 3-pointers by the time he is 38.

From there, it is a bit tough to predict just how many 3-pointers Curry will be shooting, or if he will even be playing into his late 30s. Age is unpredictable and athleticism can fall off a cliff quickly. Granted, Curry has never relied too much on his athleticism (albeit an underrated athlete).

So, let’s cut him off at 40. Assuming he is still capable of hitting an average of two 3-pointers a game for even just 50 games a year from ages 38-40, Curry would cap his career at roughly 4,600 total 3-pointers.

Again, these are humble estimations. With Curry currently in his prime, we could see him drill close to five 3-pointers for the next few seasons, which would give him a real shot at cracking 5,000 by the time it’s all said and done.

If you are wondering, Curry would need more than 5,946 total 3-pointers to double the previous record.

In order to do this, he’d need to maintain his current pace (which is at an all-time high) for 594 games, or seven full seasons. At that point, the two-time MVP would be 40 years old. It’s rather unlikely — but I am not one to bet against Stephen Curry.

Curry should aim to pass Magic as GOAT point guard

However, the goal that should be taking center stage in everyone’s mind is not how incredible of a high-score Curry can achieve in this department. Instead, it should be winning another championship in the Bay Area.

Curry has solidified himself as the greatest shooter of all time and he will only further cement himself as the years go on.

Yet, Magic Johnson still sits firmly ahead of him in the greatest point guard of all-time conversations. At least, for most people, Magic has stood above the rest of the pack as the undisputed GOAT in this department.

Curry is not going to pole vault over Magic by simply racking up an otherworldly amount of 3-pointers. No, it comes down to championships and I would argue that winning a title this year would make Curry a real threat to surpass Johnson.

Curry’s cultural impact is unmatched. His records speak for himself. The only hindrance on his resume is the lack of a Finals MVP. Capturing that elusive award and reclaiming an NBA title is all Curry needs to do now.
