Klay Thompson’s return

Slated for after the New Year, Klay Thompson’s return to the Golden State Warriors will have massive ramifications for the NBA. It does not take a rocket scientist to tell you that Klay’s anticipated return could go a few different ways.

What will Thompson look like after nearly three years away from basketball? He’ll be 32 in February, coming off consecutive season-ending injuries. Is there hope for Klay to be an All-NBA caliber player again?

Recent history says yes.

Kevin Durant is perhaps the most encouraging story for Thompson. The two-time Finals MVP has successfully overcome his own injury woes and laid down the blueprint for his former teammate to do the same.

Rotation adjustments

Klay’s return hinges on more than just his personal performance. Re-inserting himself into the starting lineup means a change for the entire rotation.

Jordan Poole, in particular, will see the biggest adjustment.

As of now, Poole is the Warriors’ secondary ball-handler and third-leading scorer. He has a massive responsibility to lead the offense next to Stephen Curry and in his absence.

When Thompson returns, Poole will be moved back to the bench, where his role as a spark plug is simplified. Will Poole excel as a Sixth Man? Most indicators suggest he will — but only time will tell.
