The Gary Payton II-Stephen Curry duo needs more minutes
The Golden State Warriors, since the return of Thompson, haven’t utilized Gary Payton II as much as they should. Thompson has a similar style of play, so it’s hurt Payton’s minutes, pushing Poole to the second unit.
Payton II, when playing alongside Curry, had one of the highest net ratings among any two-man duo for the Warriors. In the 524 minutes the two have shared the court, they have had a net rating of 17.2.
That’s the highest among and combo with over 350 minutes played. They also have a 97 defensive rating when sharing the court which has been huge for the Warriors’ success this season.
Curry is going to obviously keep getting minutes, and it’d be Payton II who would have to find time with the two-time MVP. Payton II primarily brings an intense defensive face to any lineup he’s a part of.
The Warriors are 9.8 points per 100 possessions better than their opponent with Payton II on the court. The two together along with Thompson would allow more minutes for the previous duo mentioned as well.
