Stephen Curry pushing for Warriors to fight against “losing mentality”
The Golden State Warriors lost to the Los Angeles Lakers despite Stephen Curry’s 30-point effort.
The Warriors have now lost 8 of their last 10 games, and with four-time All-Star forward Draymond Green sidelined, things are going from bad to worse. It’s clear the value that Green, who is averaging over 7 points, rebounds, and assists per game has on the team.
Stephen Curry broke out of his slump, dropping 30, but the Warriors lost. He’s fighting for the team not to give into a “losing mentality.”
The Warriors, who have still been one of the best home teams in the NBA, have dropped out of second place in the Western Conference after an ultra-strong start to the season. Memphis has now jumped them in the standings and is one of the league’s hottest teams.
For Golden State, righting their wrongs may be easier said than done. The Warriors have two games at Denver and a battle with the Clippers in their next 3 matches, so things won’t necessarily be getting easier.
However, Curry has seen this type of losing just as recent as last year, when the Warriors, who climbed into the 8th spot right before the play-in tournament, lost two straight games and missed the playoffs entirely.
Since the Warriors 2019 NBA Finals berth, which was their fifth-straight trip in as many years, Golden State has struggled, especially with Klay Thompson having been sidelined for the vast majority of that time.
With a drastically different roster, Curry is trying to ensure they don’t get complacent with their spot in the standings and dropping winnable games.
“We cannot give in to this losing mentality. We’re not that team, and I’m not going to let us be that team. … We cannot give in to this losing spirit of just finding different ways to lose basketball games,” Curry said via ESPN’s Kendra Andrews.
While Curry broke out of his slump with 30, he has struggled recently as well.
Given Thompson’s two-game hiatus with a non-Covid illness, the Warriors haven’t been at full strength either. With Green still sidelined and James Wiseman having yet to play this season, the Warriors have quite a bit to go until they get their Finals-contending lineup on the court.
Nonetheless, they’ll want to be in pristine form heading into the playoffs, and sliding in the rankings to not getting home-court advantage at all would be extremely unacceptable. With their recent play, it wouldn’t be that shocking though.
