How the Golden State Warriors can salvage their season
By Tony Pesta
The fate of the Golden State Warriors 2021-22 NBA season is hanging in the balance due to Stephen Curry’s foot injury but there are still a few ways to salvage the remainder of the regular season and head into the playoffs strong.
The path ahead is a tough one but the Golden State Warriors still have an opportunity to pull themselves together just in time for the playoffs.
Just when you thought the Warriors were preparing to hit their stride, an unfortunate injury to Curry has the team scrambling to make good on their final 12 games before the start of the postseason.
Curry is gone for at least two weeks and the team doesn’t have much of a precedent for success in his absence. Nonetheless, somebody needs to step up in order to ensure Golden State doesn’t limp into the playoffs as a vulnerable unit.
All eyes on Jordan Poole
It feels like the last few years of Jordan Poole’s development have been leading up to this one final heroic surge to lift the Warriors through the mud and into the playoffs surging.
Poole has done everything asked of him this season and just might have one trick up his sleeve to keep the Dubs competitive. He’s averaging 23.3 points and 4.3 assists on 50% percent 3-point shooting in the month of March.
Inserting Poole back into the starting lineup and allowing him to do his best Stephen Curry impression is the easiest way to alleviate this loss. It will disrupt his flow as a sixth man but is the best option while Curry is on the sideline.
Can the others step up?
Luckily, Poole is not the only one who can provide a helping hand.
Klay Thompson hasn’t looked like his normal self just yet and losing his sidekick won’t help — but the return of Draymond Green will.
Green is capable of shouldering the playmaking responsibilities and creating quality shots for Thompson, Poole and the rest of the Dubs. A vintage hot-streak from Thompson, courtesy of Draymond’s passing, is exactly what the doctor ordered.
Hiding in the shadows are players like Andrew Wiggins, Otto Porter, Damion Lee and Moses Moody, who have all been able to contribute throughout the season.
It will take an all-around team effort to keep the Warriors stepping with confidence during Curry’s recovery.
