Warriors player that must step up: Quinndary Weatherspoon

The Spurs 2019 second-round pick out of Mississippi State, Quinndary Weatherspoon has found himself as the Warriors backup point guard. While Curry was in the lineup, the Dubs usually let Poole captain the second unit.

Now, it’ll be Weatherspoon’s turn to step up. This is his third season in the NBA, spending the first two in San Antonio. He never averaged over 2.5 points per game. Through 9 games with the Warriors, he’s notching 3.3 per game on 60% from the field.

Obviously the sample size is small, but Weatherspoon is at a crucial time in his career. He needs to make the most of this chance to lead Golden State’s second unit, especially since he’s yet to average over 8 minutes per game in his career.

Weatherspoon takes about a quarter of his shots from deep, so he should be a competent threat from the three-point line as well. The Warriors knew they needed a backup point guard and never got an experienced one despite targeting Goran Dragic.

Now, they’ll ask Weatherspoon to contribute, and it could be a career-changing opportunity for him.
