Warriors role player that has stepped up: Gary Payton II

Otherwise known as the “Young Glove,” Payton II was a phenomenal addition for the Warriors at the end of last season. He saw time in 71 games for the Dubs this season and started 16 prior to the playoffs commencing.

In the postseason, Payton II has been equally as impressive. He’s seen 20, 18, and 14 minutes in the three games.

He has 2 steals and 3 blocks, but Payton II’s real impact has been his efficiency, shooting 6-for-8 from the field. He’s missed just 2 shots and was a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point land in the Warriors’ 5-point Game 3 win. He ended up a +10 in his mere 14 minutes.

While the Warriors obviously have played well as a team, they’re a +29 with Payton II on the court. His tenacity defensively and efficiency offensively have made him a viable part of the team’s playoff rotation.

For a player that seemed destined to be out of the league, finding a place where he can thrive has been a huge win-win situation. Payton II has played well through 3 games, and I expect to see more of him moving forward.
