Luka Doncic Needs His Co-Star

Luka Doncic has carried the Dallas Mavericks to their first Western Conference Finals appearance since their championship run back in 2011.

He is averaging 32.1 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 6.2 assists in the postseason and sent home the NBA’s best regular-season team, the Phoenix Suns, in a dramatic seven-game series.

However, against the Golden State Warriors, it has become apparent that the Mavericks haven’t given the All-NBA guard the necessary assistance to be considered a legitimate title contender.

Doncic has the most 40+ point performances in NBA Playoffs history for anyone under the age of 24 (8). Despite his individual greatness, he has not been able to overcome the rest of his roster. His team’s record is 2-6 and has a winning percentage of .250 when he scores at least 40 points in the postseason, which is by far the worst in NBA history.

Also, when comparing this Mavericks’ roster to the other three remaining teams in the 2022 NBA Playoffs, they clearly lack All-Star firepower.

Golden State has five players on its roster that have been named to an NBA All-Star team (Curry, Thompson, Green, Wiggins, and Igoudala), the Miami Heat have four (Butler, Adebayo, Lowry, and Oladipo), Boston has three (Tatum, Brown, Horford), while Dallas only has the one (Doncic).

In order for the Mavericks to be considered a legitimate title contender, they must pair Luka Doncic with a fellow All-Star caliber player.
