Prior to game five of the NBA Finals on Monday, Golden State Warriors fans were provided a positive update on one of the franchise’s crucial young players.

James Wiseman, the number two overall pick in the 2020 NBA draft, has missed the entirety of his second season after complications stemming from knee surgery in April 2021. But according to Shams Charania and Anthony Slater of The Athletic, the seven-foot big man could be nearing a return in the upcoming Summer League next month.

James Wiseman’s career looks set for a restart in the coming weeks, with the Golden State Warriors center progressing to a return this summer.

Wiseman’s major meniscus repair was followed by a knee scope in December, with Slater and Charania announcing a further recent development in his rehabilitation.

"“Wiseman underwent an orthobiologic injection during a multiday trip to London with Warriors general manager Bob Myers in April…The plasma-rich injection in Wiseman’s arm was a therapeutic treatment used to increase healing throughout the body”."

The positive is that Wiseman’s making strides towards a return, undoubtedly eager to put a disappointing personal season behind him despite the possibility of ending with a championship ring.

"“Wiseman has gradually progressed in the couple months since. In recent weeks, he has increased his court activity and is now sprinting for pain-free stretches”."

While the Warriors’ season will conclude either way in the next week, fans will still have plenty to look forward to over the next few months.

Golden State holds the 28th selection in next week’s NBA draft, with the franchise hoping for a similar outcome to that of their last 28th pick – Jordan Poole in 2019.

Summer League then begins on July 7, a tournament where Warriors fans may see Wiseman on the floor for the first time next to fellow recent lottery picks Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody.

Wiseman averaged 11.5 points and 5.8 rebounds over 39 games during his rookie season.
