Golden State Warriors free agent target: JaVale McGee

If there’s one player more likely to head elsewhere in free agency, it’s Kevon Looney. Golden State gave Payton II a chance to shine, and he’ll likely stick around. The Warriors should manage to keep Porter Jr. as well, even if it takes the MLE.

If Looney leaves, that will open the door for third-year center James Wiseman to be the full-time starting center. Wiseman should be able to handle that load after two seasons, most of which were spent injured, and a summer league under his belt.

To backup Wiseman, given experience and a consistent lob threat, the Warriors would want to then sign JaVale McGee. McGee, despite having a high impact on the Suns last season, would likely be a veteran’s minimum player.

McGee played in 74 games last season and averaged 9.2 points per game, shooting 63% from the field. It was a great season for the 34-year-old, and having won two championships in the Bay Area, he’s familiar with the Big 3 and their style of play as well.

McGee back to the Bay Area, especially if Looney leaves, would be a huge win.
