Warriors should be able to re-sign Looney because of: Of course, money
The Golden State Warriors are not going to force Looney to take a huge cut.
He showed that value, and chances are they understand that he may be able to get north of $10 million in free agency. Per Michael Scotto at HoopsHype, Looney may be seeing that offer from rivals.
With Golden State having most of its contracts locked up (three rotational players needing a new deal), it should be able to stay around its luxury tax level while giving Looney this amount. Looney is worth every penny of it.
While James Wiseman should one day be able to come into the lineup and give that type of impact, he’s not there defensively, and it would be a sizable step down if Wiseman were to start next season.
Looney should see double the $5 million he was making last three seasons, and the Warriors more than likely won’t ask for any heavy cut from the veteran. They’ve shown they’ll pay to keep their roster together, and this should be another example of that.
