Golden State Warriors a defensive specialist (backcourt)

Gary Payton II will not be walking through that door.

The Golden State Warriors learned firsthand how useful it could be to have a defensive-minded guard on the bench last season. GP2’s ability to enter a game and wear out opposing ball handlers was incredibly helpful.

This season, however, the Dubs do not have a guard who can fill this same role. While Klay Thompson, Donte DiVincenzo and Andrew Wiggins are all quality defenders — they will not operate in the same way as a player like Payton did.

Moses Moody could solve this if he makes a leap defensively.

Or, the Dubs could hit the free agency market for another scrappy defender. Rajon Rondo and Dennis Schroder are candidates as well as Austin Rivers, who is not as sound defensively but could provide energy and hustle in the backcourt.

The goal here is to spare Stephen Curry and Jordan Poole the energy needed to defend opposing ball handlers for 48 minutes. A short burst of defense from another guard makes all the difference.
