Stephen Curry has reportedly reached out to Kevin Durant “several times”
The Golden State Warriors are juggling the desire to stay competitive for the next decade with the thoughts of two more championships with relative ease right now.
The reason they get to theoretically opt between the two is that former MVP Kevin Durant has requested a trade. If Durant gets his wish is still be seen as well as waters have calmed over the past week.
The Golden State Warriors’ two-time MVP Stephen Curry has reached out to Kevin Durant about his potential return to the Bay Area.
Durant is among the best scorers in the history of the league. When he was with the Warriors, Golden State was theoretically unbeatable, running through the NBA in two of their three seasons and really only losing to Toronto due to an accumulation injuries.
While how he views legacy could dampen his desire to re-join the Warriors, there’s no denying that he could solidify himself as one of the most successful players in league history with a few more titles.
Although the front office will have the final say, Durant and Curry have been talking, with Curry having reached out “several times.” Fox Sports’ Ric Bucher reported that the two have been in conversation regarding a potential move.
“A league source says Curry has reached out several times to Durant, eager to improve his chances of winning a fifth championship and surpassing LeBron James, with whom Curry is currently tied at four titles each,” Bucher wrote.
The 12-time All-Star is locked up in his current contract for the next four years, so Durant’s one- and two-year deals are behind him, giving him less leverage as well. Durant is set to make over $53 million in the final season of his deal.
He will be 34 before the start of next season which makes many fans skeptical of how much longer he’ll be at the top of his game, especially just a few years removed from a devasting Achilles injury.
At the same time, no one will argue that with Durant the Warriors would be head and shoulders above their competition, which is the main reasoning for why the front office would want to do what they can to acquire the four-time scoring champion.
All signs point to Curry being on board with a potential trade, and now it would just be up to the front office to make it happen. There are plenty of reasons to believe they’ll pass on this opportunity though.
