Golden State Warriors’ offseason has been underwhelming
By Tony Pesta
No one should have been expecting a bang but the Golden State Warriors‘ offseason has gone off with mostly a whimper.
The Dubs did not have much incentive to shake things up this summer. After all, it was only one month ago that they hoisted a championship trophy with this roster.
Golden State also did not have many options for changing the core even if they wanted to. They are already operating with the highest payroll in the NBA and the only notable moves they could really make would have to come via trade.
Regardless, the Warriors probably hoped they could avoid losing two of their most important assets.
The 2022 offseason is feeling like a net loss for the Golden State Warriors as they look to replace the likes of Otto Porter Jr. and Gary Payton II.
There is no debating how valuable Otto Porter Jr. and Gary Payton II were to the Dubs title run.
Porter provided steady shooting from the wing as a versatile forward who could play multiple positions and defend the perimeter.
Meanwhile, Payton was deployed in bursts to apply pressure to opposing ball handlers as well as make timely cuts to the basket, where he shot 61.6% from the field.
WIth both Porter and Payton gone, the Dubs have signed Donte DiVincenzo in their place. DiVincenzo can adequately cover most of the ground lost by Payton and Porter but there is only so much he can do to fill their void.
Other losses, including Damion Lee, Nemanja Bejlica and Juan Toscano-Anderson won’t have as much of an impact but serve as notable blows to the Warriors’ depth.
Bringing back Kevon Looney was their biggest achievement. Without him, this offseason would have been looking dreary.
The Dubs will be counting on their young core quite a bit next season, barring any last-second trades or signings to pad the rotation.
This leaves us feeling a tad underwhelmed. There is no reason to panic but a few key losses this summer could wind up hurting the Warriors next season.
