Golden State Warriors keeping roster spot open for Andre Iguodala
It was a chaotic season for the Warriors, one that ended with another banner being raised. Golden State, a team often injured throughout the season, battled through those injuries and still earned the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference.
Their injuries ranged from two-time MVP Stephen Curry who missed the last several weeks to former No. 2 overall pick James Wiseman who didn’t play a single game this season. Nonetheless, they still came out on top.
The Golden State Warriors are patiently waiting for forward Andre Iguodala to make a decision on his future, even holding open a spot for the champion.
Their roster has transformed this season though with Otto Porter Jr. and Gary Payton II heading elsewhere in free agency. The Warriors also lost backup center Nemanja Bjelica which will be an underrated loss.
Another name that may not be back is Andre Iguodala.
One of the team’s many veterans and key locker room presence, Iguodala may be ready to hang them up. It doesn’t help that he was often injured this past season, likely altering his attitude towards a potential return
Per The Athletic’s Anthony Slater, the Warriors are waiting for Iguodala, and they have yet to give him a time frame on when they need a decision bye. Iguodala was on the Dubs roster for all four titles.
However, he played in just seven postseason games due to a myriad of injuries and played in under ten minutes per game when available.
During the regular season, Iggy played in 31 games and averaged 4 points per game. It just wasn’t the same Iguodala, and now 38, there’s a real chance he doesn’t return. It would be interesting if he took a spot in the Warriors’ front office much like Leandro Barbosa.
Iguodala is familiar with the franchise and would understand what a reduced role may look like, so there is potential for him to return and only get a quarter per game. Then again, that just may not be worth it to Iggy at this stage in his career.
Nonetheless, a spot will be there if he wants it.
