The Golden State Warriors have solved their greatest need
The Golden State Warriors are planning to sign JaMychal Green after he clears waivers following a buyout with the Oklahoma City Thunder. This is a home-run signing for the Warriors.
This is the type of news Warriors fans should welcome as he’ll solve their greatest need. With free agency continuing to drag on through July, Golden State had dragged its feet on replacing Otto Porter Jr.
The Golden State Warriors desperately needed to add frontcourt depth, and they’ve done so with the hopeful signing of JaMychal Green.
It wasn’t just Porter Jr. though as many have already forgotten that the Dubs no longer have center Nemanja Bjelica either. He went to play in Turkey while Porter Jr. joined the Toronto Raptors.
Green should actually give them the best of both worlds. He’s just as larger as Porter Jr. and still agile enough to guard backcourt opponents. On the other hand, he should be tall enough to aid rebounding in smaller lineups.
The Warriors lost that stretch-four talent when Porter Jr. left for Toronto. Bjelica often gave them similar minutes but wasn’t in the rotation often in the postseason. That said, the news was broken by The Athletic’s Shams Charania.
Green has had a successful NBA season, but like many that have come before him, the veteran forward has yet to win a Championship.
Green has been to the playoffs seven times — most recently with the Denver Nuggets, who the Warriors eliminated. The last two seasons it was with the Nuggets, and the two prior to that, it was with the Clippers. The three before then were with the Grizzlies.
Undrafted, the 32-year-old stands 6-foot-8. His best season in the league was his fourth season with the Memphis Grizzlies where he averaged 10.3 points per game, shooting 53.5% from the field.
The following season, Green shot over 40% from deep. He’s a 36.6% career three-point shooter. While not quite at Porter Jr.’s level, Green will provide that stretch-four skill set that Golden State was lacking.
The Warriors needed a player like Green as they have James Wiseman who can protect the rim and Kevon Looney who is a monster on the offensive glass and can defend at a high level. Green gives the Warriors offensive versatility they otherwise would be without.
This is a huge win-win situation for both the veteran and the Warriors.
