Mac McClung had a great summer league for the Golden State Warriors after a short stint with the Los Angeles Lakers earlier in the year.

A former star who accrued a large following from his insane dunk videos, McClung played a few seasons in college, taking his talents to both Georgetown and Texas Tech. McClung was unlikely to crack the roster, but that has since changed as he’s signed a one-year deal with Golden State.

The Golden State Warriors have signed guard Mac McClung following a successful stint with the team in the 2K23 Las Vegas Summer League.

It’s a feel-good story as McClung has struggled to find his footing in the NBA, but the potential is there.

That was on full display during the summer league as he consistently made the right play and put a solid stat line. McClung ended his time in Las Vegas by averaging 13.4 points per game.

He shot 46% from the field and 50% from three. His efficiency is what likely impressed scouts the most and ultimately earned him a spot on the 15-man roster. On top of that, in just 24.4 minutes per game, McClung averaged 4.8 assists.

That said, Shams Charania of The Athletic was among the first to report the deal.

McClung is going into his second season in the league. He was undrafted out of Texas Tech and spent time with both the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers last season. McClung is undersized at 6-foot-2.

He shot 33% from deep in his mere two games, one for the Bulls and the other for the Lakers. He got 22 minutes in his stint with the Lakers and just 3 with Chicago. There isn’t much there to actually judge McClung’s performances at the highest level.

McClung isn’t going to make the Dubs that much more of a title contender, but he is assertive in the pick and roll and could be a good facilitator off the bench. Also, the Warriors didn’t have much money to spend, so adding McClung is a low-risk, low-cost way to fill out the roster.

This is a good opportunity for the young gun, and we’ve seen players like Payton II take the chance they had with Golden State and transform their careers. Hopefully, McClung can do the same.
